A former Super Eagles of Nigeria player, captain and Coach, Sunday Oliseh has reminisced on the USA 1994 World Cup, and is still in confusion on why the Super Eagles never won the crown.
The former Super Eagles captain, said the team had the “ingredients” to win the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the USA.
He concluded that, maybe “the overall circumstances weren’t in our favour”.
The 1994 edition of the tournament was Nigeria’s debut in the FIFA organized tournament.
The Clement Westerhof-led team were grouped alongside World football power houses Argentina, Greece, and underdog Bulgaria.
Super Eagles went ahead to top the group only but on a goal difference.
However, they were eliminated by a 10-man Italy squad in the next round.
“I still think we had the potential to win that year.
“All the ingredients were there, but the overall circumstances weren’t in our favour.”
Olishe is still adamant that the failure to win the crown wasn’t in any way related to the quality of the squad they possess at that time.
“At any rate, it had nothing to do with our squad, which had the talent to go all the way,” Oliseh told FIFA website
